Have You Heard?
This is my second year participating in Relay for Life, and I’m looking forward to supporting this cause.
Relay for Life reaches out to the community and brings people together for the same cause, fighting cancer.
It is a 24-hour walk sponsored by the American Cancer Society. It was started in 1985 by Dr. Jorden Klatt. Individuals create teams and are encouraged to raise $100.
All the money that is raised goes to the American Cancer Society.
Relay has been held in Baldwin County for nine years now. Last year, Relay for Life raised $160,000.
Many people have been affected by cancer, and this program has helped many families. Although I have never lost anyone to cancer, I do know some people who are suffering with it. This program wants to increase the number of cancer survivors, and it is an honor to be part of that.
I am a proud member of Gamma Sigma Sigma. Relay for Life is one of the most important community service events that we participate in. Gamma Sigma Sigma has held many fundraisers to raise money for this worthy cause, including Pie in the Professor’s Face.
This fundraiser was held on Thursday, April 4, on front campus. Many professors, like Dr. Rob Viau, Dr. Ginger Carter, James Arias, and Michael Marion, gave their time to help us raise money.
Staff members, such as Kendall Stiles, Eddie Howard, Suzette Zompetti, and Bruce Harshbarger, also participated in this fundraiser. Thank you to all of the participants, especially Dr. Carter, who give so much to Relay for Life every year. Gamma Sigma Sigma raised over $300 from this event!
Pie in the Professor’s Face is just one of the ways we raised money for cancer research. We also sponsored Make Love on the sidewalk, Fazoli’s Night and Slice of Life. Gamma Sigma Sigma raised over $4,000 for Relay for Life last year, and our goal this year is to raise $10,000.
I, like many of my fellow Gamma Sigma Sigma brothers and sisters, will be walking at Relay for Life. It is a great privilege to walk that night and know that my few steps will be helping cancer research.
I plan on walking for three hours. I will also be working a table for Gamma Beta Phi. Relay for Life also features food and many contests. It lasts from 12 p.m. on Friday, April 20 to 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 21. It will be held at Walter B.
Last year, I walked around two hours and really enjoyed the ceremony. Most of our college’s organizations, sororities and fraternities came and also raised a lot of money. It was wonderful to see so many working together for such a great cause. It brings a smile to my face to think how many people are being helped by this event.
Relay for Life has saved many lives, and this year’s event should be another success. I am delighted to be a part of it, and I hope I will enjoy it even more than last year.
