Christian Corvos returns as starting catcher for the Georgia College & State University Bobcats with a strong start to the 2002 year.
Corvos attended Colegio San Luis in Caracas, Venezuela. His high school did not have an official team. He played in outside leagues during the spring and summer. In these leagues (during his high school years), he led his team to victory in the Division
Championship three straight years. He was tops in the conference in batting average and home runs twice.
Corvos transferred to GC&SU from Seminole Community College in Florida. There he earned Second Team
All-Conference honors as a freshman and First Team All-Conference honors as a sophomore. He set the school record of 25 career home runs. He tied the single season homer record with 16.
Last year Corvos played in 51 games, starting in 43 of them. He batted .270 with 3 home runs and 30 RBI. He batted .303 in 26 Peach Belt Conference games.
The most drastic difference for Corvos from last year would be 20-25 pounds. During this off-season, through a new conditioning program, Corvos was able to drop his weight. This is one of many factors that led him to be starting catcher for the Bobcats for the second straight year.
“Last year I was really overweight,” said Corvos. “But I changed a lot of eating habits. I lost 20-25 pounds, which makes a big difference. I’m a lot faster, and I look better now. I look more athletic.”
This year Corvos is off to a great start. He’s played and started in 32 games. He’s second on the team in RBIs behind third baseman Jon Chappell (39 RBI) with 38 runs batted in. He’s fourth on the team in batting average (.354) and home runs (4). He’s already belted three more doubles (11) than last year.
Corvos has a very patient approach at the plate. He’s third on the team in walks (15). His philosophy at the plate has changed from last year.
“My approach is not to try to hit too hard every single at bat,” said Corvos. “Don’t try to hit two homers in one at bat. I just try to see the ball and hit it.”
Corvos has also improved defensively as a catcher this year. He has thrown out 25 percent of would-be base stealers.
Behind the plate he has only allowed 2 past balls.
“It’s good to have soft hands,” said Corvos. “I’ve worked on blocking and having quick hands. I try to have a good release point toward second base and be more accurate.”
The GC&SU Bobcats (26-11) are 11th in the nation in the Collegiate Baseball Magazine NCAA Division II Poll. Corvos hopes that the team can finish the year out strong and win the Peach Belt Conference Tournament and get to the Division II College World Series.
“My main goal is for the team to win,” said Corvos. “It’s all about the team. Hopefully, my numbers will help the team get to regionals and win regionals, and go to the World Series. That’s what everyone wants.”
