The Georgia College & State University softball team is finally getting the results they have been looking for.
Over Spring Break, the Lady Bobcats played very well in the West Florida Invitational.
The tournament did not start off well for GC&SU; the team lost both of their games on March 27th. The one bright spot for the Lady Bobcats was when Kristin Hughes and Rebecca Schweitzer hit back to back homeruns. Heading into the next day, the Lady Bobcats got a good spark from both Michelle Mayne and Cathy Chandler.
Mayne (6-5) tossed a complete game three-hit shutout in GC&SU’s 4-0 victory over Olivet Nazarene University (Ill). Hughes led the Lady Bobcats at the plate after going 3-3 with
a solo homerun and 2 RBI. Schweitzer and Nickie Black also helped out as they both went 2-3 in the game.
In their second game, Chandler’s pitching was just as good as Mayne’s was the previous game. GC&SU won 3-0 over Faulkner University (AL). Chandler (6-1) tossed a complete game shutout to earn the win. Hughes again was on fire, belting a two run homerun, her third long ball of the tournament, in the first inning of the game. Melanie Cannon and Michelle Mayne had two hits apiece to lead the Lady Bobcats.
Heading into March 29th’s games, GC&SU was looking for their bats to come alive.
In the first game, the offense provided the power and speed for an easy 19-1 win. GC&SU defeated Linderwood University 19-1 in five short innings.
Mayne continued her hot hitting as she went 1-2 with a solo home run and was also the winning pitcher of the game. Joni Frei went 3-4 with a home run, while Hughes went 2-3 to lead GC&SU at the plate.
In their second game of the day, the Lady Bobcats lost their hot bats in a 2-1 loss to West Florida. Brook Harrison drove in the only run of the game for the Lady Bobcats. Cathy Chandler was the losing pitcher as her record dropped to 6-2.
The Lady Bobcats finished the tournament with a 3-3 record. Frei lifted her batting average to .330 as she had an outstanding tournament. Hughes lifted her average 23 points to make it .382; she also leads the team in homeruns (9), RBI’s (31), hits (42), slugging percentage (.691) and total bases with 76.
The Lady Bobcats are getting close to the Peach Belt Championship tournament, so come out and support your Lady Bobcats for the rest of the semester.
