GC&SU golfers finish strong at Bobcat Invitational

The Georgia College & State University golfers finished fifth out of 15 teams to make an impression on the rest of the Peach Belt Athletic Conference.
As the first round of the tournament came to the end, the Bobcats were in fifth place, trailing USC Aiken by just 17 strokes. GC&SU finished the day with a score of 592. USC Aiken was leading with a score of 575, Florida Southern was in second place with 581, Pfeiffer University was third after shooting 583 and West Florida was in fourth place after scoring a 590 on the first day of the tournament. The Bobcats fired rounds of 299 and 293 for there score of 592.
GC&SU’s own David Robinson stroked rounds of 70 and 69 for a five under par 139 to lead the field. Lee Harper was leading USC Aiken when the first day end with rounds of 73 and 68 to be in second place with a three-under par 141.
In addition to Robinson, GC&SU was led by Jose Martinez Medrano who he shot two rounds of 74 for a 18th place standing going into the second day. Freshman Carter Collins was tied for 33rd with two rounds of 76 for a 152 on the day, while William Gywn fired rounds of 79 and 74 for a 153, which was good enough for a 36th place, rounging out the Bobcat top four golfers.
In the second day of the tournament Robinson shot a par 72 to take the low-medallist award for the entire event. Tuesday’s final round was slowed by a three hour rain delay.
“We finished ahead of nine ranked teams that are ranked ahead of us in the polls,” said GC&SU golf coach Jimmy Wilson. “I am very pleased with the way the team played in the tournament.”
USC Aiken placed four players in the top six, they winning the tournament with rounds of 290, 285 and 291 for a two-day score of 866. Pfeiffer University was second with a three-round 874, followed by Florida Southern (877) and West Florida (884). GC&SU finished fifth in the fifteen team field with rounds of 299, 293and 298 for a final score of 890.
“I am very proud of David, to win the low medallist honors for the entire tournament,” said Wilson.
Robinson held off Pfeiffer’s Ben Case, who fired a 68 on the last day of the tournament to fall one shot short of Robinson’s five-under par. Carter Collins finished tied for 20th for GC&SU after carding a 73 for a final score 225. William Gywn was tied for 33rd with a final score of 228. Jose Martinez Medrano was tied for 44th and rounded out the top four GC&SU golfers with his three day total of 231.
“Hopefully, we can start playing a little better,” said Wilson. “I still do not think that we have played our best golf yet. We are getting better but we are not quite there yet.”
GC&SU will play in the Carolina Sands Intercollegiate, which will be hosted by UNC Pembroke April 12-14.
So get ready for GC&SU golf as the golf team as already turned some heads in the Peach Belt Conference this season.
