GC&SU Fest brings young jazz musicians to campus
Special to The Colonnade
Ten middle and high school jazz bands will be showcased at the 13th Annual Jazz Fest 2002, beginning at 1:30 p.m.,Thursday, April 18, on the front campus of Georgia College & State University. It’s free and open to the public.
GC&SU’s former music and theatre department chairman Jim Willoughby created Jazz Fest in 1989 as an event at which young musicians could play jazz before an audience and hear others play. The bands are not in competition, but they play before a panel of judges, and trophies for individual performance are presented at the end of the Jazz Fest. All participants receive certificates.
This year’s fest includes guest bands Ultra Sound of Athens, Ga., and the GC&SU Jazz Combo and ends with the final campus performance for the academic year of the GC&SU Jazz Band.
“Bring your picnic blanket, dinner, and enjoy some great jazz music,” said Shiver. “I hope the weather’s fine and we have a great crowd.”
