From the Editors

Student Government Association officer elections are coming up soon, and I want to encourage everyone to get out and vote.
Believe it or not, this election will have an affect on you if you are going to be here next year. Officers of SGA are responsible for running the organization. They make sure the meetings run smoothly, the committees are productive, that the money they allocate is distributed properly and much more.
Senators do a lot of work for SGA also. The election for senators will not be until the fall, but it is equally important. Every student has a voice through the senators of SGA.
Recently, the proposal for a new parking deck was passed through SGA. From what I saw, a lot of thought, discussion and consideration was put into this decision. I even saw someone giving out surveys to ask students if they wanted the parking deck or not. That took a lot of dedication to serving the students of GC&SU.
What I don’t know is if students are paying attention to what is happening with the parking deck. SGA has done everything they can do to tell everyone about the parking deck, and yes, the $40.00 semesterly fee that comes along with it. But have you as a student asked questions and voiced your opinion about it? Judging by the lackadaisical attitude a lot of the students on this campus have, I would imagine that not many questions have been asked.
I hear complaints about this and that, but I hardly ever see a letter to the Editor sent to us at The Colonnade. It makes me wonder how often students speak up to their SGA representative about what they would like changed. I hope that in the future you will visit the SGA office in MSU 128 the next time you have something to say. If you don’t do that, I would encourage you to send a signed letter to the Editor by bringing it to MSU 143 or emailing it to colonnade@gcsu.edu.
Issues such as the parking deck will come up in the future, and I am sure you want to make sure that the people holding the positions for the decisions are responsible individuals.
I used to serve as an SGA senator, and I know how much work goes into it. There is a lot more to it than weekly meetings. The officers work hard to make sure all questions are answered and that the meetings are productive. The officers spend time in the SGA office every week to help the senators and any student who needs to talk to someone.
I encourage everyone to voice his or her opinion, and you can start doing that by voting for the new SGA officers on April 17 and 18.
