Gamma Sigma Sigma hosts annual “Pie in the professor’s face”

Special to The Colonnade

Gamma Sigma Sigma, Georgia College and State University’s reigning Dean’s Cup Champion, is sponsoring the fourth annual Pie in the Professor’s Face.
Pie in the Professor’s Face is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. All proceeds that are received through Pie in the Professor’s Face will be donated to Relay for Life in Gamma Sigma Sigma’s name. This year the event will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2002 from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m..
“This fundraiser is a Gamma Sigma Sigma tradition that I look forward to every year. We’ve been planning for this event since Christmas break,” said Jessica Roman, president of the GC&SU’s Gamma Sigma Sigma chapter.
Throughout the day, GC&SU students are given the opportunity to pie their favorite professors and staff members with a plate full of shaving cream. Each pie costs $1.
According to J.W. Mozley, the organizer of this year’s event, the Georgia College & State University community has really pulled together to donate their time.
“I am so appreciative of the faculty, administration and staff that have volunteered. The event would not be possible without their help,” said Mozley.
Dr. Ginger Carter, associate professor of English, Speech and Journalism, is one of this year’s participants. She has agreed to match the amount students pay to pie her up to 200 dollars. Carter has challenged the rest of the faculty and staff to do the same.
“I participate in Pie in the Professor’s Face to fight the battle against cancer. This event is an excellent opportunity to raise money for Relay for Life,” said Carter.
Gamma Sigma Sigma, for three years in a row, is the college organization that has raised the most money for Relay for Life. Last year, the organization contributed over $4,000 to the cause.
“Our chapter has set a goal of $10,000. I have agreed to die my hair purple for the remainder of the semester if Gamma Sig can meet my challenge. I truly believe that the chapter can achieve it, since we have all been affected by cancer,” said Kim Benfield, service vice-president of the GC&SU chapter.
Gamma Sigma Sigma has sponsored other Relay for Life fundraisers such as Make Love on the Sidewalk and Fazoli’s Night. The chapter is organizing the second annual Slice for Life, a faculty and staff bakeoff, for April 16, 2002.
Mozley and the rest of the members of Gamma Sigma Sigma have high hopes for the amount of money that can be raised for Relay for Life from Pie in the Professor’s Face.
“We hope to raise $600 from this event alone. With the cooporation of the students, faculty and staff, I believe we can meet this goal,” said Mozley.
