The GC&SU Jazz Combo spring concert will be Thursday, March 21 at 8 p.m. in Max Noah Recital Hall.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The theme of the concert is fusion, a combination of different types of music fused with jazz.
Some of the fusion standards to be performed are Joe Zawinul’s “Birdland” and Chick Corea’s “Spain.”
Vocalist Paris Bunckley will perform George Gershwin’s “Summertime” with a hip-hop twist.
“We’ve changed the beat, and the feel of the tune is different,” said Dr. Ross Feller, director of the Jazz Combo.
“Jazz is a very flexible form of music,” Feller said. “Almost any kind of music can be fused with jazz.”
The combo will play Wayne Shorter’s “Ju Ju” and some tunes by Sonny Rollins. Some songs of Miles Davis, the fusion master himself, will also be featured.
Dr. Feller started the Jazz Combo in the fall of 2000. Feller said the combo exposes students to music outside the mainstream of jazz. The combo also provides members with opportunities to show their individual talents, especially through improvisation, Feller said.
“The most important people in jazz are the performers,” Feller said.
As director of the Jazz Combo, Feller has coached the group during rehearsals. At the concert, Feller will be playing along with the other members.
The last Jazz Combo concert had a large turnou, so arriving early for the concert is encouraged.
