SGA surveys student body

The Student Government Association recently polled the student body about two important issues.
A survey regarding a proposed parking deck and a change in the class schedules across campus was administered to a diverse selection of classes.
“This was a joint effort between two SGA committees, the Academic Affairs committee and the Student Services committee,” said J.W. Mozley, SGA Attorney General.
One issue that was addressed was the proposed parking deck.
“Last year Harry Keim came to the last SGA meeting of the academic year to propose a parking deck to alleviate some of our parking concerns,” said Mozley. The parking deck would be located at the corners of Thomas and Clark Streets.”
The students that took part in the survey were generally receptive to the idea.
“The survey results showed that 87% of the student body that was surveyed would like to see a student parking deck. Only 55% of the students who were surveyed said they would be willing to pay a special fee of $44.00 each semester,” said Mozley.
This $44.00 fee would be in addition to the current parking fee. This fee would not be covered by the HOPE Scholarship, and all students who are taking classes here would be required to pay the fee regardless of whether they would be here to use the parking deck or not.
The parking deck would only be for GC&SU students – it would not be available for faculty or staff.
The other issue on the survey was the current class schedule model.
“We divided the survey into two parts, one for 1000 and 2000 level courses and one for 3000 and 4000 courses,” said Mozley.
334 people responded to questions pertaining to 1000 and 2000 level courses, and 214 people responded to 3000 and 4000 level courses.
“The issue of class scheduling was born in Academic Council and then it went to a sub-committee made up of students, faculty and staff. The committee discussed the fact that we are not optimizing available classroom space and the number of classes offered by each academic department,” said Mozley.
The original goal of SGA was to survey 10% of the student population.
They were unable to meet that goal, but according to Mozley, they feel confident that the results are reflective of the overall student opinion.
“We surveyed day classes, night classes, upper level, lower level and classes in nearly all of the schools,” said Mozley.
According to the Constitution of GC&SU’s SGA, “The mission of the Student Government Association is to actively work to improve the quality of life for the student body, as well as the university community as a whole.”
The resolution about the class schedules will go to the floor of SGA next week, and the resolution about the parking deck will be presented in mid-March.
