The Mass Communication Senior Seminar class at Georgia College and State University has a lot to be proud of lately.
Their project, Real Lessons from Reality Television, has won a top-three paper prize from the Broadcast Education Association.
The students will present the paper at BEA’s annual conference in Las Vegas from April 5-8. They will receive a plaque and $100 for their work.
The class, taught by Dr. Mary Jean Land, teamed up with the senior seminar class at Elon University to try a different approach to learning. This class studied TV programs on television such as MTV’s “Real World” and “Road Rules.”
This is the third time Land has tried this type of learning. Last year’s student paper was presented at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in Washington, D.C., and was presented at the university’s Undergraduate Research Conference.
“It’s a challenging and rewarding experience for students to participate in academic research,” said Land.
The students who participated were Christy Ennis (Student Leader), Windy Caviness, Kesha Evans, Paige Harrison, Brooke Houston, Diane Ivey, Stephen Kirkley, Adeline Manceau, Jill McKinney, Kimbo Moore, Gabrielle Scandrett, April Whirley and John Thompson.
“I think this is a good opportunity and experience, and I am excited about representing GC&SU in Las Vegas,” said Christy Ennis, a senior and the student leader.
“It is an honor that our paper was selected out of about 25 papers,” said April Whirley, a senior and a member of the class.
Land said she appreciated the support of the Student Government Association and administration at GC&SU.
“The GC&SU administration has been very cooperative for helping financially, ” Land said. “They have helped out a great deal.”ZZZZZZ
