From the bleachers

Baseball is a great sport and my favorite sport. But for this edition of “From the Bleachers,” I decided to write about the softball team here at Georgia College & State University.
The Lady Bobcats are in one of the hardest Division II conferences around.
I like what Head Coach Windy Thees has done with her team. She brought in an assistant coach from the University of Iowa (Kelly Zeistra), then Beau Edwards (who played Baseball with her at GC&SU came over as a hittinh coach. Thees did everything she needed to do to improve her team from last year’s 23-24 record. Thees turned this program around, and her team is ready to contend for the Peach Belt Conference Title.
The Peach Belt is known for having good baseball teams and it normally does, but this year the softball teams in the Peach Belt Conference could be making most of the noise.
This year’s team is going to be awesome. As of right now, newcomer Kristin Hughes is batting .455 with four homeruns and 14 RBI’s. She is putting up some phenomenal numbers.
The team is currently 9-4 and looking for a lot more. After winning the Kennesaw State Tournament, the team is already enjoying a good year.
Many things make up a good team; you need leadership, commitment and chemistry. But this year’s team has all of that.
With Kristin Hughes, Rebecca Heinicka and Michelle Mayne, the Lady Bobcats will be bringing problems to many of their opponents throughout the season.
Then you can go to the middle of the line-up and see Nickie Black and Joni Frei, who are two players who know how to run. Black batted .366 last year and wants to better that record this season. Frei, a sophomore, is just a solid player. She can hit, run and throw; she’s got a lot of good tools.
At the bottom of the line-up, things do not get much easier for opponents. Jill Williams has really good range at shortstop, and either Mandi Jones or Jocelyn Lakani can easily step-in and play a good outfield. Rebecca Schweitzer is really strong at first base, and she is already hitting the ball really well.
Then going to pitching, the team is even more dangerous. With Jennifer Joiner and her cannon for an arm pitching, the team has a nice advantage. Then you throw in Michelle Mayne and/or Cathy Chandler, and your pitching can not be stopped. Freshman Brook Harrison has already pitched a couple of good games. Look for her to just get better and better. Harrison had Kennesaw off beat (two hits in her last start) as she destroyed a team with one of the best offensives in the Peach Belt.
This team can hit. When all of the players are clicking, look out for the Lady Bobcats. Coach Thees has this team heading in the right direction as they are gearing up to start Peach Belt play.
The sky is the limit for this year’s GC&SU softball team. But this team can not let this go to their heads, if they do, then they will go down.
These girls (all 16 of them) can just flat play, so look for a lot of wins throughout the season.
Come out and watch the Lady Bobcats all semester long as they look to be crowned Peach Belt champions.
