Thornton Wilder’s play “Our Town” is coming to Georgia College & State University Thursday, Feb. 21.
“Our Town” is a three-act play that takes place in Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire. It is about the lives of the people in that town. “Our Town” will open February 21st in the Russell Auditorium. The play will run from the Feb. 21 – 23 at 8 p.m. with a 2 p.m. performance on Sunday.
Walter Bilderback, program coordinator of theater and producer, said tha when the play premiered in 1937, it was a sensation because Thornton Wilder created that this was not a “play” in the usual sense of the word.
“The stage was essentially empty. It looked as if it were set up for rehearsal,” said Bilderback. “Chairs, ladders, and a few similar items become the entire town of Grover’s Corners.”
“Our Town” is “one of the great American plays, and is of course The great Small Town American Play,” Bilderback said.
“Our Town” is being directed by special guest David Kennedy, who is from New York and received an MFA from Yale School of Drama.
“I am proud to be able to bring a director such as David Kennedy to Milledgeville to direct the play with a wonderful student cast and crew,” Bilderback said.
“Working with him [Kennedy] has been a wonderful experience,” cast member, Mandy Butler said. “He has provided the cast with invaluable insight from someone who is out in the world professional theater that we will be breaking into in just a short while.”
“This is going to be an ‘Our Town’ unlike anything anyone has ever seen — something the audience will remember for years,” said Bilderback. “I hope as many members of the GC&SU community as possible will take advantage of the opportunity to see this production and share the experience with the cast.”
General admission for “Our Town” is $10. Admission for senior citizens, non-GC& SU students and GC&SU faculty and staff is $6. Admission GC&SU students with valid I.D. is $2.
