Letter to the Editors
Dear Editors,
In light of the President’s call for Americans to volunteer, a new focus has been placed on helping others in need. There are many exciting and rewarding opportunities for people looking to volunteer both on national and on international fronts.
As Americans, many times our view of the world is limited to what we see on TV or what goes on in our daily lives. Rarely do the majority of us consider the impact we could make in a person’s life or in a community by volunteering. It is for these reasons that programs are developing all over the world for people looking to volunteer.
Here in the US, many large companies have adopted a day of volunteer work each year where employees can participate in a local volunteer project without having to use vacation time.
The companies that participate in these programs have realized the importance of volunteer work in building a sense of community within the company as well as the importance of lending a helping hand to the community where the company resides.
For people really looking to make a difference on a global scale, there are programs all over the world looking for the assistance of volunteers.
Volunteers are needed in many areas, including teaching, construction, environmental work, working with children and adult with disabilities, to name a few.
Many organizations, particularly in rural areas, are understaffed and under funded and rely on the support of volunteers to keep going.
As for the benefits gained by volunteering abroad, they are limitless and can include learning a foreign language, gaining international work experience, broadening one’s world view, experiencing a new culture first hand and preparing for future employment of residence in another country. Anyone looking to volunteer can truly make a difference in today’s world.
