Being the middle of February could only mean one thing to all you sport fans, intramurals are up and running.
“Even through enrollment is down this year, our intramurals are up by a lot,” said graduate assistant Sean Frantom.
This season has brought about more good teams to all of the intramural sports. For instance, basketball will be sending two guy teams and two girl teams to the state tournament in Athens. In the Eastern Conference Snellville came in first place. Kappa Sigma and M.O.B. were undefeated throughtout the season but Snellville came out on top. The Western Conference will have the Oreo’s represent the conference. The Oreo’s and Minute Men were both undefeated but the Oreo’s were just too strong and ended up winning the tournament. For the women the Hoopsters and Lady Showtime both with 5-1 records will press their luck in the state tournament. Phi Mu, is in a close second with a 5-2 record. The ladies now have one game left, until they start their tournament.
“We have had a lot more competitive teams then before, in the guys conference’s we finished with four undefeated teams,” said Frantom.
Intramural basketball has had so much success that for the first time ever this year basketball will feature a slam dunk and three point contest. The tentative plan is to have these two contests the first week in March.
Another intramural sport that is finishing up is soccer. Right now the Eastern Conference is led by Sven’s Men who are 3-0. In second place are Phi Kappa Phi with a 3-1 record. Kappa Sigma and THEM are tied for third with a 1-2 record, while 2 Left Feet are in last with a 0-3 record. The Western Conference has a tie for first place with the Blazers and Fuzzy Bunnies, who are both 3-0. In second are the International All-stars with a 1-2 record. Mother Russia is in fourth and International Football club is in last with a 0-3 record.
“Our talent is really spread through four teams, with three of them being undefeated,” said Frantom.
The first week in March will also bring intramural softball, which is the most played intramural sport here at Georgia College & State University.
“Last year we had 26 teams play softball, and this year I am hoping for 30 teams,” said Frantom.
For the first time ever softball will have a home run contest. This event will take place also in the first week in March.
“I think play intramural sports to get them away from their school work, and people just love the game they are playing” said Frantom. “I like the interaction with the students who play; I also enjoy being out with people and spending time with them.”
