Have you Heard?
As a member of the 2001-2001 Homecoming Court, I was sincerely disappointed in the turnout for homecoming.
Homecoming was Saturday, Feb. 2. Both of our basketball teams played University of North Carolina at Pembrook. These games were incredible and entertaining. They were certainly two of the best games I have seen here.
However, most of our student population didn’t take the opportunity to enjoy these games. The student section of the stands was only three-quarters full by half time of the Bobcats’ game. About half of the student section was filled for the Lady Bobcats’ game. For once, I would like to see the student section overflowing with students so that even the upper stands would have to be used.
I know as well as everyone else does that if we had a football team, more people would stay on the weekend and attend the games. However, we don’t have a football team, and we do have two very talented basketball teams. They play their hearts out and don’t receive the needed amount of cheering and appreciation.
After the homecoming game, Joey Villemez, president pro-temp of SGA and head of homecoming for this year, had a casual dance planned for all students. However, most of the fans didn’t stay for the dance. This was the first year that GC&SU had a homecoming dance, and I can see why. Joey did a great job planning homecoming and this dance, and yet it was ignored.
I know most students go home on the weekends, and that’s okay. I go home and visit my family on some weekends, too. However, I feel that homecoming should be a big deal. In high schools, the entire week of homecoming is filled with all sorts of activities like “twin day,” “pajama day,” “80s day” or some other decade and, of course, a pep rally. Then the week ends with a huge dance.
I think that next year we could have a big homecoming as long as we create a homecoming planning committee of around 15 students that represent our student body accurately. These 15 students could fill up the entire week of homecoming with all kinds of events, and then homecoming could either be on Saturday or a Wednesday. Either way, it would be followed with a big dance.
Another thing that bothered me was the fact that none of our fraternities chose a representative for Mr. GC&SU. Last year, Mr. GC&SU was a member of one of the fraternities, but this year they didn’t participate. Maybe next year the sororities and fraternities should receive notice of when homecoming is at the beginning of spring semester, so that the homecoming committee can have more time to set everything up. Joey did a great job, but he is only one person. If the committee that I mentioned earlier is created, then homecoming will have the ability to be big.
If you are interested in joining the committee, please contact SGA or Joey Villemez. If you are interested in attending a Bobcat game, they are playing on Saturday in the Centennial Center at 5:30 p.m.
