The #13 ranked Georgia College & State University women’s tennis team could not hold off #5 ranked Rollins College as the team lost 5-1 Feb. 10th at Armstrong Atlantic State University.
GC&SU (1-1) put themselves in an early hole they could not dig out of. After losing two of three doubles matches, Rollins went on to secure the win, with three consecutive single match wins.
For GC&SU Julia Roudkovskaya and Annika Persson picked up the team lone win after they knocked off Vanessa Caddick and Carla Prieto 8-6. Karin Ramstrom and Jodie Lobsiger tried to keep the momentum going but lost 8-3 at the No. 2 doubles to Jessica Niebauer and Andrea Root. Kremena Vassileva and Elizabeth Williams dropped their No. 3 doubles match 8-1 to Lindsay Soffes and Jill Oppenheim.
Singles play was not any better as, Soffes defeated GC&SU’s Ramstrom in straight sets 6-3; 6-0. No. 3 Niebauer defeated Lobsiger in a tough 6-3; 6-4 match. The No. 4 singles for GC&SU did not fair anybody as Oppenheim for Rollins defeated Williams 6-0; 6-1.
The men’s tennis team won its third straight match on Feb. 12th with an easy 8-1 victory at Newberry College. The Bobcats (3-1) swept all three doubles matches and then took five out of the six single matches for the easy win.
In doubles action, GC&SU’s James Gorin and Alex Beauregard blew away Newberry’s (2-2) Sebastian Sucre and Rob Hindall 8-1 in the no.1 spot. Thomas Karlsson and Mikael Petterson blanked Alex Avilia and Kauchik Sridhar 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. At the No. 3 doubles spot Chris McConnachie and Thomas Hemmestad completed the doubles sweep with an easy 8-1 victory.
In singles play, GC&SU won five of the six matches to grab the easy win. All of the Bobcat wins came in straight sets. Mikael Petterson’s victory (6-2; 6-0) over No. 2 Jesus Sucre lead the way for GC&SU. Also, picking up victories were James Gorin, Chris McConnachie, Per Schartum-Hansen, and Jamie Stanford.
Both tennis teams will be in action throughout the semester, so come out watch these Bobcat teams at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility.
