David Walczak, a junior transfer student, has a lot of desire and hope for the Bobcat baseball team.
Walczak, a first baseman, came from the Community College of Rhode Island where he was All-Region and set the homerun and RBI records for the school.
He chose Georgia College & State University because, “it has a great baseball tradition and I’ve heard a lot about it from different people back home.”
One in his position might feel pressure from trying to fill the shoes of two time All American Chris Carr who played first base for the Bobcats last year. But Walczak is calm and collected.
“I don’t feel any pressure at all. I think I’m capable of filling his shoes, ” he said.
Coach Steve Mrowka has confidence in Walczak as well.
“He has a lot of raw talent and has really improved since the Fall in all areas. He has improved his defensive play at first base and base running,” Mwroka said. We expect him to be a good hitter this year and next year.”
Walczak said GC&SU’s team has great coaches from which he learns a lot and that the team has great chemistry. He would like to have a great season and make a name for himself. Like any collegiate baseball athlete, his goal for the team is to make it to the College World Series.
“I think Walczak is the type of guy that can make an impact on the team. He’s a very hard worker,” teammate Mike Joyce said.
Walczak has been playing baseball since he was four years old. He continues to love the sport because “you only have so long to play, it’s fun and baseball is more of a mental game rather than physical.”
Free time are two words Walczak doesn’t get to hear very often. But when he does he likes to relax and study.
“I don’t have a lot of free time,” Walczak said. “Being a student athlete is a very demanding schedule.”
