Bowling team qualifies for national tournament
Special to The Colonnade
This past weekend, Georgia College & State University’s Bowling Team competed in the Division I Intercollegiate Region 6 Bowling Championship at Florida State University and won the right to go to the National Championships.
“The bowling team members have been looking for this opportunity since September,” said education professor Geza Martiny, the team’s coach. “The team has been practicing with much dedication throughout the fall.”
Since the conception of the GC&SU bowling club, the ladies and men’s teams have qualified for the National Intercollegiate Bowling Championships every year. This year was no exception. GC&SU took three teams: two women’s and one men’s.
The regional entries for this year included some of the top teams in the nation. The University of Central Florida entered teams for the first time. Both the men and women of UCF won the Southeastern Intercollegiate Bowling Conference. The men’s team qualified for the ACUI-Division 1Intercollegiate Region 6 Championship and took sixth place two weeks ago in Las Vegas, Nevada. Florida A&M entered a full women’s team for the first time. GC&SU bowlers were looking at one of the strongest fields of teams to compete with. However, the GC&SU lost two of the top bowlers due to eligibility for men and women. Despite this difficulty, Martiny was pleased with the GC&SU bowlers’ best efforts.
“I was elated with the men’s team’s performance,” said Martiny. “It was hard to compete with the other teams after losing two of our top bowlers, but they surprised me.”
The end result of this year’s regional was a happy one for the GC&SU bowling teams. Both the men and women qualified for the national championship. From each region the top five teams qualify. The final result for the top five men’s teams:
