Last Saturday night turned out to be a thrilling night for those who attended
the homecoming double-header at the Centennial Center. The Georgia College and State University’s men’s and women’s teams swept UNC Pembroke in a game that was important to the Peach Belt Conference standings.
The Lady Bobcats (12-8, 8-5 PBC) solidly defeated the Lady Braves by scoring a season-high 90 points. They held UNC Pembroke to just 75 during the game. The Lady Bobcats were led by the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week, senior forward Betsy Foy. Foy had 25 points for the night, which made her the fifth highest all time leading scorer for the GC&SU women. She currently has 1,159 career points. The other offensive contributors in the game were Breane Haggard, who had 16 points and six rebounds, Andrea Lee who had 14 points 8 rebounds, and Dalana Watson with 14 points and five rebounds.
The Lady Bobcats shot 48.5% from the floor, draining nine three pointers and hit 81% of their free throws. UNC Pembroke cut the lead down to three points right after the half, but the Lady Bobcats stayed focused, took control of the gam, and slowly pulled ahea, with the game ending in a 90-75 victory. When asked about the game, Coach Carrick had this to say about the Lady Bobcats,
“I loved the effort and the intensity. They kept going and extended the lead during the entire game.”
The Bobcats (13-7, 8-5 PBC) won out over the UNC Pembroke Braves (9-11, 5-8 PBC) in a hard fought game with the final score of 93-81. The first half of the game was an intense back-and-forth battle that resulted in the Bobcats coming out on top with a narrow three-point lead with a score of 41-38. The offense exploded in the second half. The Bobcats shot for 50% from the field, and nailing 40% of their three point attempts in the second half.
The two top leading scorers of the game were both from GC&SU. They were Rodney Keener and Joseph Harris. Keener was the Player of the Week for the Peach Belt Conference. The junior guard hit a career high 33 points last Wednesday against USC Spartanburg and followed it up with this game, hitting 23 points and grabbing five rebounds for the game. Senior forward Joseph Harris also came through with an outstanding effort, achieving a career high in points scored with 17. Harris also hit the boards hard grabbing 14 rebounds. This matches his career best, which also happened to be against UNC Pembroke when the two teams meet earlier this year on 01/02/02. Harris also had four assists and a steal for the night. Other contributors in the game were Ron Hood with 15 points and Darryl Ruffus, who had 13 points and five rebounds. Ivan Bracic came through with 10 points and three rebounds off the bench.
Coach Sellers had this to say about the game, “It was a Big win for us. The real key was the huge lift the guys from the bench gave. We had five guys in double figures, which was a major help.”
The Bobcats are slowly climbing up the Peach Belt Conference standings. They have now won four out of their last five games and are currently in third place. Their next game is an away game at USC Spartanburg this Saturday.
