Are you ever scared of change? Pamela Levi, Dean of the School of Health Sciences, says life revolves around change.
Levi has been the Dean of Health Sciences for 18 years, which makes her the senior dean in the state. Her decision to retire later this semester was “very tough and took a lot of courage.”
“It came sooner than expected,” Levi said. “But I am proud of the things I’ve seen happen in the school of Health Sciences.”
By writing in a journal daily, Levi found out who she really is and stayed more in touch with herself. By reading what she wrote, Levi found her opportunity for change.
Just as students make the transition from high school to college to graduating, they adapt to the change of their environment, Levi has to adjust to her new environment after retiring. She wants students to know it takes just as much courage to leave as it does to enter a new place.
Levi said she will miss her job because she will not interact daily with people under 30 years old, who she says look at the world differently. She will also miss the faculty at Georgia College and State University.
“I love to interchange with people not in my discipline. I like to know what they think and care about and what makes them laugh and smile. It’s great to have someone else’s perspective on life,” Levi said.
Upon retiring, Levi will eventually move to Charleston, South Carolina with her husband; however, for the next year, she will try out new things to decide what to do for the next ten years. Levi would like to work for a private foundation, try to make the community a better place, write and research, travel, live in Italy, finish her Masters of Fine Arts and learn about Mass Media and photography.
It’s safe to say Levi will keep herself busy over the next year trying to adapt to the change of not having a work schedule. She knows that retirement is definitely the next step of her life.
“To grow you have to change, and you have to know when it is right for yourself,” Levi said.
