Georgia College & State University baseball is off and running with a full head of steam after going 3-0 in the Peach Belt Challenge tournament hosted by the University of North Florida. The three-game winning streak has helped the #16 ranked Bobcats to climb the ladder to #11 in the NCAA Division II.
The Bobcats’ season opener against Presbyterian College Friday night ended with a 12-4 victory. GC&SU got behind early in the game when Davis Rice smashed a two run homer in the first inning. The Bobcats would rally back in the seventh, however, when Will Martin drove in Eddie Campbell on a run scoring single. The close game suspense would not last long though. The Bobcats would rip the game open in the eighth inning with seven runs highlighted by back-to-back homers by Martin and Stathos.
Will Martin finished the game, going a blistering 4-4 with a two-run home run and 5 RBI. Alex Stathos finished the game 2-3 with 3 RBI, while Jason Semples went 3-4 with one RBI and 2 runs scored. David Walczak had a good day going 2-4 with two RBI. Will Anderson pitched a great game and picked up the relief win for GC&SU. Anderson allowed only one run on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts in five complete innings.
Saturday’s game against Florida Tech showed remnants of Friday’s game as the Bobcats blew open the scoreless game with eight runs in the third inning. Michael Joyce showed great confidence on the mound for seven complete innings. Joyce allowed only one run to help the Bobcats to an 11-2 victory over the Panthers.
Hal Jackson and Jon Chappell led the Bobcats at the plate against the Panthers. Jackson went 2-4 with a home run and 2 RBI, while Chappell went 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI.
Panther’s starter, Mehul Patel, never got out of the third inning and took the loss after allowing 8 runs on 6 hits.
The Bobcats showed great offensive skill at the plate on Sunday’s game pounding out 16 hits and placing an impressive 13-4 victory over Limestone College.
Eddie Campbell, Hal Jackson and Christian Corvos led the way for the Bobcats at the plate. Campbell went 3-4 with a double and 3 RBI. Jackson went 3-5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI. Corvos went 3-6 with a triple and 3 RBI. Jon Chappell had another good offensive game going 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI. Jay Henderson pitched a solid game and picked up the win for GC&SU.
The now #11 ranked Bobcats will host the #6 ranked University of Tampa in a three game series Saturday and Sunday at the John Kurtz Field in Milledgeville. Saturday is a doubleheader and begins at 1 p.m. Sunday’s game will also begin at 1 p.m.
