Annual Relay For Life “Spirit Day” on Feb.12

Special to The Colonnade

Baldwin County supporters of Relay for Life are encouraged to wear their favorite Relay for Life apparel Tuesday, Feb 12.
That day has been designated “Relay for Life Spirit Day” by the Baldwin County planning committee, and Committee Chair Kendall Stiles wants to see the community “covered in Relay for Life” regalia.
“I just want people to get into the Relay spirit and mood and, most of all, have fun with this day,” Stiles said. “That is what Relay for Life is all about – it is about a community that takes on a fight and has fun while doing it. I can’t wait to drive around town on Feb. 12 and see Baldwin covered in Relay for Life. Last year alone we had over 2,000 participants in the Relay, so those t-shirts should be out there.”
Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event in the fight against all types of cancer. This year’s Relay For Life is scheduled for April 19 and 20 at Walter B. Williams Park in Milledgeville, Ga.
“Spirit Day” is Stiles’ idea, and she shared it with the American Cancer Society staff at a youth summit last November. She hopes this will become a national event.
“I started thinking of the most appropriate day to have this National Day, and it occurred to me that it would be nice to have it on Relay for Life founder Dr. Gordon Klatt’s birthday,” Stiles said. “This would honor him as well as show the success of Relay for Life. The staff members are supposed to be finding out when Dr. Klatt’s birthday is, and I hope we can start this tradition nationally very soon. We will call it ‘Gordy Day.’”
Stiles said she especially wants to see examples of that Relay spirit and encourages Baldwin County residents to send in photos of “Most Spirited Relayers.”
“I would like community members to take photos of everyone from their area who would be the ‘Most Spirited Relayer.’ If they will send these photos to me, Kendall Stiles, CPO 100, The GIVE Center, Milledgeville, Ga 31061, we will have a contest to find the Baldwin County ‘Most Spirited Relayer.’ What a great title to bestow upon someone. We will also honor the winner at the Baldwin County Relay for Life 2002.”
Stiles added that businesses are welcome to decorate their windows and doors to celebrate Spirit Day, which coincides with the first Relay for Life team captain’s meeting at Georgia Military College’s Auditorium at 5:30 p.m.
“I think it will be so powerful to walk all around town and see the Relay t-shirts everywhere — in banks, Wal-Mart, grocery stores, schools, churches, restaurants or just walking down the streets,” Stiles said. “I want to see them all around the county.”
