Four students were selected during the Fall 2001 semester to be Georgia College & State University’s Bruster’s Champions of the Month. This program, started by the G.I.V.E. Center, recognizes volunteers who have gone beyond the call of duty in the area of community service.
Students, faculty and staff are nominated by their peers, and a selection committee reviews the nomination forms and selects one winner per month.
The September Champion is J.W. Mozley, Membership Vice-President for Gamma Sigma Sigma and Student Government Association Attorney General. Mozley also serves as a Student Ambassador and is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Eta Sigma Alpha, and Gamma Beta Phi. His volunteer efforts are with community after-school programs, the GC&SU blood drives, Relay for Life and other community projects with Gamma Sigma Sigma.
Amy Howell was selected as the October Champion of the Month for her work with Gamma Sigma Sigma and for being in charge of their adopted family during the Spring 2001 Semester. She also was a team captain for Relay for Life and volunteered with CASA to make supply packs for children. Howell also works for the Union Recorder and her articles can be seen in the paper.
For the November Champion of the Month, Andy Cisick was selected due to his work with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Serving as a co-president for the BBBS Club, he helped organize a yard sale that raised over $400. He also helps with other events such as the Halloween Carnival and monthly activities for the children.
The last Champion of the Month selected for Fall 2001 was Elizabeth Tatum for the month of December. Tatum is a member of Gamma Sigma Sigma and received recognition as the member who completed the most service hours during the Fall. She is also a Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters and volunteers for the GC&SU blood drives.
Each Champion of the Month receives a gift certificate from Bruster’s and a treat of appreciation from the G.I.V.E. Center. They are also recognized at the semester awards program, Cheers to Volunteers. From the winners, a Champion of the Year will be selected and announced in April.
