Rodney Keener, a junior guard for the Georgia College & State University men’s basketball team, is a man of much ambition and talent.
He has been playing basketball since he was six years old and has received numerous awards. At Stratford High School in Goose Creek, South Carolina, Keener received the Coach’s award and Most Valuable Player.
Before transferring to GC&SU this year, Keener attended Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama, where he received Freshman of the Year, All Conference and All Tournament awards. His goals for this season are to receive Most Improved Player and All Conference.
In his first season of basketball at GC&SU, Keener has entered the week with a starting position every game and leads the team in points with an average of 18.3 per game. Keener also stands third in the Peachbelt Conference in three-point field goals, averaging 46.3 percent, and comes in fourth in scoring and seventh in steals with 24.
Keener knows that his team goal of making it to the playoffs and to the NCAA championship in March is only possible with hard work and dedication.
“We will get to where we need to be by working hard,” he said.
Keener admitted that upon coming to GC&SU, he was intimidated because of the larger size of the school. In the past five months, Keener has become accustomed to the size of GC&SU.
“I’ve gotten a chance to meet everyone, and everyone is friendly, which helped me to adjust,” said Keener. “It also helps when your coach is an understanding guy.”
“During crunch time I’d like to be the one with the ball,” said Keener.
He also loves basketball because of the excitement, the energy, and because he gets to run a lot.
GC&SU is lucky to have Rodney Keener as an addition to the basketball
team. If his statistics keep improving, he will be on his way to achieving the goals he has set for himself and for the team.
