From the bleachers
Everybody always talks about having a football team and what that would do for this school.
I wonder now, more then ever, if this school should in fact have a football team? Please do not mistake me, I would love having a football team here at Georgia College & State University, but how can the school get a football team if students can not fill the centennial center on nights of basketball games.
People say things would be different if there was an actual football team here to go and watch. I do not believe it; since I started school here (a year and a half ago) not one time have I even seen centennial center be close to packed with GC&SU fans. Everyone complains about needing a football team to make the school even better, but if nobody fills up the gym, then why should students complain about not having a football team. This is the perfect time to make your mark here at GC&SU. If you really think the school would be better off with a football team, then go and support other sports on campus.
The baseball and softball teams play for a good three months, and only a handful of students are at those games. Why would the school even want to spend all the money to have a football team and then have nobody take the time to watch them play?
What would be the purpose in having a sport that nobody here at school would watch. We, as fans are not doing our job to bring another sport here. Our President may look at the attendance for basketball, baseball and softball games and see no need to have a football team here because attendance is so low to the proportion of students here at GC&SU. The school has made the right choice in not getting a football team for the simple reason that not enough fans are coming to other sporting events.
Everyone wants to be remembered at GC&SU, so why not be the greatest sports fan or the one who brought others to watch sporting events here.
I still would love to see football at GC&SU, but that will not happen if students do nothing about it. I am not saying for students to start a riot, but if you want something, you have to go out and get it and not wait for it to come to you.
The school is always looking for things to improve, and one thing they can not improve is attendance at sport games. That is where we step in. Let the school know you are a GC&SU fan, and support every sport you know of.
If you want the school to even think about getting a football team, then go and support the several other interesting sports at Georgia College & State University.
