The Georgia College & State University men’s and women’s basketball teams swept the University of North Florida at the Centennial Center in a doubleheader last Wednesday night.
The Lady Bobcats (8-7, 4-4 PBC) and the Lady Ospreys (10-4, 5-2) played first. The women of GC&SU outscored the UNF Ospreys 73-67 in a very close and competitive game. The Lady Bobcats were led by a season — and career — high 29 points from starting senior forward Betsy Foy. Foy also grabbed six rebounds and tied a GC&SU record of most free throws made in a game with 16. Dalana Watson and Andrea Lee helped out the cause by scoring 11 and 10 points respectively.
The women shot 54% (20-37) from the field, while committing few turnovers and shooting an outstanding 80% (28-35) from the free throw line. The Lady Ospreys only shot 36.1% (22-61) from the floor, but they did out-rebound the Lady Bobcats 34-30. The Lady Bobcats defeated the UNF Lady Ospreys for their third straight victory.
The Bobcats (9-6, 4-4 PBC) started slo, but came on strong in the second half to defeat their Peach Belt Conference rival, the UNF Ospreys (6-8, 3-4 PBC), 86-74.
The game was tied at 36 at halftime. The Bobcats, led by Rodney Keener, battled in a very tight game to pull out the victory. Keener led the team with 26 points. He was backed-up by Daryl Ruffus, who scored 17 points, and Derrick Nicholson, who scored 11 points.
The Bobcats shot 54% (15-28) from the field in the second half of the game and were very productive at the free-throw line, shooting 86% (18-21). GC&SU only committed seven turnovers, their lowest total of the year. The Bobcats also out-rebounded the Ospreys 45-30.
Both the Bobcats and the Lady Bobcats will be on the road this weekend. Saturday the two teams will be in Florence, SC. The Francis Marion University will be the Bobcats’ opponents. The Lady Bobcats lost their first meeting with FMU this year 68-57, while the men’s team defeated FMU in their only meeting so far 64-63.
