Annual spring Fault Line Reading Series
By Saundra Z. Brown
Staff Writer
The Fault Line Reading Series for the Spring Semester is every Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. at the Cellar Coffeehouse.
The series gives students the opportunity to present their literary work in a coffeehouse setting.
Keith Hendrix (former student) and Kellie Wells, series advisor to give students a few years ago, the opportunity to share their work with an audience started the Fault Line Series.
“There’s a lot of talent here, and I’m glad there’s a venue for it,” said Well “This year, in addition to creative writing students, there have been theater students participating in the reading. Writers tend to work in isolation, so this is a way to bring the work to an audience and test it out to see how it’s responded to.”
“Literature is not necessary only to be read. It needs to be heard. So much more can be gotten from a work when it is delivered by the actual author. One can never fully realize a writers style until one has heard the writer read, said Brandy Bell, coordinator of the Fault Lline Reading Series.”
Some of the inspired readers for the spring series include Myke Johns, Derrick Varn, Shel Evans, and Heather Patterson.
Myke Johns who is a musician and a poet, combines these two talents in his readings. Derrick Varn is a veteran reader and writer of the series. Shel Evans is a writer and reader that is well known for her poem “First Stoning.” Heather Patterson is also a veteran writer and reader for the Fault Line Series.
“Reading work aloud is always an illuminating experience; it’s useful for writers to hear how their work is received, to note where the audience laughs or become very still,” said Wells. “It’s not always predictable.”
Martin Lammon, head of the Creative Writing Department at Georgia College & State University, “has been supportive of the series.”
