From the bleachers

The Colonnade is back, bringing our readers great stories, movie reviews, weekly columns and The Beat.
On the sports front, many things have taken place since The Colonnade was last published. Here at Georgia College & State University, the basketball teams are in full swing. The basketball teams have had some good games, and both teams have improved greatly since the beginning of the season. Now, with the beginning of baseball and softball only a few weeks away, things look to be in full gear for the upcoming semester. Intramural basketball and soccer are set to begin, and both are always exciting to watch.
Nationally in baseball, the New York Mets traded for Roberto Alomar and also got Mo Vaughn. Hockey is back, too. With so many good teams having a lot of success this early, it is going to be hard to determine who will be this year’s Stanley Cup winner.
Basketball is in full effect for what has already been a great season. Michael Jordan has done the impossible and made the Washington Wizards a good team and a playoff contender. At the same time, MJ has said that he wants to play next season. The Lakers (26-8) are playing great like always, and the New Jersey Nets, a surprise team, are leading the Eastern Conference in wins with 24.
Football just recently got into the playoffs with Baltimore, Oakland, Green Bay, and Philadelphia all winning their first round match ups.
Steve Spurrier resigned as Florida’s head coach and quickly became the Washington Redskins head coach. The NFL has already had six coaches lose their jobs. George O’Leary resigned as Notre Dame’s head coach because he lied on his resume, and now he will be the Minnesota Vikings assistant head coach and the defensive line coach.
Jennifer Capriati took over the number 1 spot in women’s tennis after finally completing her comeback from using drugs. Andre Agassi and Serena Williams are not playing in the Australia Open due to injuries.
NASCAR is set to start Feb. 24, and Jeff Gordon again looks like the driver to beat. Golf is getting to the tee box with a few tournaments already completed this year. With Tiger Woods playing in the Bob Hope Classic set for next weekend, he looks to automatically be the favorite.
The Duke Blue Devils are still ranked no.1, even though they suffered a loss against Florida State. Florida has been impressive since the start of the season and is slowly closing the gap on Duke. The no.1 ranked Connecticut Huskies women defeated the no. 2 ranked Tennessee Volunteers 84-72; the Huskies seem to be in control of their own destiny.
Things seem to be in place for a great semester here at GC&SU, so go and watch the many sports here on campus!
