Betsy Foy is returning to Georgia College & State University women’s basketball after a very successful junior year.
Foy is the starting forward for the team. She attended South Gwinnett High School. She was named AAAA player of the year in 1995 and led her team to the State Championship. She earned All-County honors all four years and All-State honors for three years. Foy still remains the school’s all-time leading scorer.
Foy originally started her college basketball career at Georgia Tech. After a very prosperous freshman year, when she set a record for free throw percentage and was once named ACC Freshman of the Week. She was on her way to a very promising ACC career, but she was unhappy with the school.
“I didn’t have a good time there, I didn’t know if I wanted to play basketball anymore,” said Foy. “A friend of mine went here and played basketball and told me how great it was. I came down here and loved it. It [the school] made me love basketball again. Georgia College has really done a lot for me personally.”
Foy had a solid junior year. She was the Lady Bobcats ‘leading scorer with 14.0 points per game. She was also the team’s leading rebounder with 5.8 per game. She was second on the team with 33 three-point field goals. Foy is the all-time leader in career free throws made and free throw percentage. Last year she shot 85.3% from the free throw line. Foy was named to the Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll. In scoring, Foy reached double digits 25 times out of 28 games.
Foy is looking to continue her success this year. So far in 14 games, Foy has averaged 18.2 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game. She is very optimistic about this year.
“We’re having to go through a lot as a team this year,” said Foy. “It’s a hard conference, but the teams are all pretty much at the same level. Each game has to be a forty-minute, put it on the line must win. It took us a few games to realize that, but I think that we’re finally coming around.”
The Lady Bobcats had an outstanding season last year, but with the absence of two graduating seniors, the team finds themselves struggling. With the new, younger players, Foy finds herself helping and spending time with her old and new teammates.
“This is probably the first year that I’ve really hung out with my team on an ‘outside of basketball’ basis,” said Foy. “It’s been just as enjoyable for me as I think it has been for them. On the court, I take more of a leadership role. I think it helps them to have somebody on the court as well as the sidelines.”
Foy has really adapted well to the GC&SU atmosphere. She really enjoys the school and town. Another one of the big reasons that Foy chose to come, and ultimately stay, at GC&SU was the coaching staff. Although the staff has changed over the years (with the exception of the head coach), the level of the expertise and helpfulness has always remained very high.
“Coach Carrick and I get along really well.” said Foy. “We’re both pretty sarcastic. Then there’s JB [assistant coach Jonathon Barbaree] who is more on the sensitive side. I can get yelled at by Coach Carrick and then go to Jonathon, so they fit together very well.”
Foy has had a very good career at GC&SU. She has had three outstanding years with the Lady Bobcats and looks to go into coaching after she graduates.
