Annual BAVA festival plans underway

Preparations for this year’s BAVA festival are underway. Choices for the headliner are being narrowed down while vendors and other bands are being booked. BAVA Festival is scheduled for April 13, 2002.
Surveys given out at Midnight Breakfast in December showed that Lifehouse was the number one choice for the headliner, but because Lifehouse is currently not on tour, the headliner may be chosen from among artists such as Ludacris, Jon Mayer, Alien Ant Farm, or Ween. These bands received the next highest votes.
Eddie Howard, Director of Student Activities, said of the band selection, “At this point, that’s wide open. We’re trying to bring in the bands the students voted for.”
There will be a Battle of the Bands during Spring Fling, the week leading up to BAVA. The winner at this event will be the opening band at BAVA.
BAVA 2002 marks the third year of the music festival. Artists such as Cowboy Mouth, Drivin’ n’ Cryin’, and Run DMC have headlined in the past. Local bands such as Moonshine Still, Dancin’ Grannies, and Davis St. have also performed.
While the last two shows were successful, students can expect to see some changes this year.
Howard said, “This year will be more of a festival. There will be a lot more to do during the day. We are trying to bring in more vendors and food.”
Another big change is where some of the show’s proceeds will go. For the last two years, some money from t-shirt sales has gone to the A.N.G.E.L.S. organization. This year, any organization on campus can submit a proposal to the selection committee, which will decide who gets the money for their cause.
Howard said, “A dollar will be added to the price of each ticket, and every dollar on every ticket sold will go to whoever is chosen to be the philanthropy.”
Howard stresses that any organization can request the donations.
“It’s not only community service related organizations. Any organization that wants to do a project can submit a proposal,” said Howard.
There is still a lot of work to be done to get ready for BAVA.
Howard said, “We need tons of help. Volunteers are needed to help with everything from clean up to advertising. Students can go to the BAVA website and find out who to contact to help.”
