The Voice
No matter what trying times we are facing, what impossible deadline has to be met, or what the standard excuse is at the time, many students at Georgia College & State University are still missing out on great opportunities to get involved in extra-curricular activities.
High school came and went so fast, and college is doing the same. Regrets are something we have in life, but the ones from high school can be changed here at college. This is our last chance to really find ourselves, to find out who we are and who we are going to be, before we are let loose in the real world.
Versatility is an asset everyone on this campus should possess. Yes, some of these activities are educational, but some are fun ones that no one seems to check out until it is too late. After all, college is about education and growing and expanding our horizons.
Take for instance some staff writers for The Colonnade. Senior mass communication students suddenly want to get involved in the newspaper. One reason is to build a portfolio of all their work in college, which they will need to show future employers that they can do the job expected. A huge part of what they look for is writing samples — good communication skills on paper — something everyone forgot about in the shuffle of life. Now, soon-to-be graduates do not have the opportunity to start over again, to try to be the section editor or even the editor. That chance has passed by for them. For some of you, though, it’s still possible.
Where are the fans for GC&SU’s sports teams such as softball, baseball, cross country, basketball, tennis, golf or even intramurals? Does anyone know what school spirit is or what a fan is? Webster’s dictionary defines the word fan as a devoted admirer. Devoted? We seem to be all about school spirit in high school, but it never carries over to college. Why? Who knows? One thing is for sure: all of the players deserve to be cheered on after all of the hours they have put in to represent our school. Family and friends keep people going and help them to succeed. That is where a fan comes into play, to help someone succeed. What a great feeling you would have to know that your team won, and you were there to cheer them on. These are memories you should not let pass you by.
Greek and club organizations have many positive aspects that people overlook, too. Meeting people and making connections are useful in every major field. Who you know makes you in this cutthroat world, and they also add an impressive section to your resume. What more could you ask for?
These chances have not bypassed all of us. Get involved, and please do not let these opportunities breeze by you! When you are sitting at graduation, do not ponder why you, as a student, did not get more involved.
