Golfers finish season strong

The Georgia College & State University Golf team closed out the 2001 fall season with a fourth place finish. The tournament was held November 12th, at the Western Carolina University Shoot-Out at Burning Ridge, South Carolina.

Pfeiffer University won the event with a two-day score of 598. After Pfeiffer came Murray State and Valdosta State; these two teams had two-day scores of 600 and 602 respectively. GC&SU followed these three teams with a score of 608.

Low-medallist of the tournament was Appalachian State’s Matt Riddick, who carded rounds of 70 and 73 on the par 72 Burning Ridge Course for a one under par 143. Top performers for GC&SU were Brad Davis, David Robinson, William Gwyn and Jose Medrano Martinez. Davis had a great weekend; he led the Bobcats with a seventh place finish after recording identical rounds of 73 for a two over par 146. Robinson did not have his best stuff the whole weekend and finished tied for 12th. After carding a 75, Robinson couldn’t turn his luck around with a 76 the second day of the tournament for a total of 151. Gwyn did not play too poorly with a two-day of 74 and 78; he finished with a total of 152. That score was good enough to earn him a tie for 16th place. Martinez rounded out the top four for GC&SU with a two-day total of 159. He finished tied for 40th after carding rounds of 77 and 82.

This tournament ends GC&SU’s fall season. The golf team will be back in action in the spring of 2002.
