Campus catering policy amended

The contract with Sodexho Campus Services was amended May 5,2001, and those changes went into effect June of this year.

Before the changes, the contract with Sodexho Campus Services read as follows: “Food and beverage service for all College sponsored functions such as banquets, private parties, receptions, refreshment service, conferences, or other special events shall be provided exclusively by Contractor.”

The contract was amended in order to allow Registered Student Organizations to serve food and beverages that were purchased from a source other than Sodexho Student Services.

The amendment changed the clause to read as follows: “Contractor shall provide a catering guide with discounted prices ‘For Student Organizations Only’ which allows student organizations to pick up and self-serve food and/or beverages at student organization events. Such catering guide shall be made available to all student organizations recognized by the College at the beginning of each academic year. All student organizations recognized by the College shall also be permitted to self-serve their own snacks at student organization events.”

The changes to the contract were specified to mean the following: “Food and beverage service for any college-sponsored/university-sponsored event will be provided exclusively by Sodexho Campus Services.” “College-sponsored” or “university-sponsored” is defined by either of the following criteria: GC&SU funds (including Foundation funds) are supporting any portion of the event, or the event is being held on University property (including main campus, west campus, athletic facilities, or any other University property).

The contract then specifies that this leaves RSO’s with only three options. They can “use Sodexho’s full catering services voluntarily and pay full price.” They can “use Sodexho’s ‘For Student Organizations Only’ catering guide to purchase food/beverages at discounted prices and self-serve the food/beverages at the event.” They also have the option of “providing food/beverages on their own (from whatever source they desire) and self-serve the food/beverages at the event.”

These three options are allowed at any event regardless of location, size, or purpose. Also, RSO’s are not allowed “to ‘sponsor’ events for other groups for catering purposes, and at no time is a student organization permitted to use a caterer other than Sodexho.”

All these words and clauses add up to mean that unless you are going to purchase food yourself and serve it yourself, then you must use Sodexho Student Services. Sodexho must provide food for whatever function your RSO sponsors if it uses any money from GC&SU or it is on GC&SU property unless you serve it yourself.
