Student Leaders Gain Experience
From the Student Ambassador Team to presidents of various campus organizations, participants from the 2000-2001 Emerging Leaders Retreat are seen leading others on and off campus.
The Emerging Leaders Retreat is a retreat where students who have been nominated by staff, faculty and student organizations as prospective leaders participate in weekend workshops to learn more about Georgia College & State University, Student Affairs and leadership training.
This past years Emerging Leaders Retreat had 23 student participants who went through the entire process.
Joseph Pate, a graduate student in Student Activities and a coordinator for the weekend, feels that the retreat helped the emerging leaders see their potential.
“We wanted to provide an experience for future leaders at GC&SU that not only helped them learn skills but also gave them a chance to interact with other students who were motivated and interested,” Pate said. “It also allowed the students to interact with older student leaders and significant faculty and staff.”
Bret Benson, one of the student participants, felt that the retreat gave him confidence and a feeling that he could get any position he went out for. He, along with the other emerging leaders, has made many accomplishments.
Here are just a few positions the emerging leaders now hold.
Benson serves as the President of the Napier Hall Council, Attorney General of the Peer Conduct Board, and was just recently named a Student Ambassador.
Erin Fuller is the President of Outsiders and the Co-president of Gay-Straight Alliance.
Mileta Neely is a part of the Napier Hall Council and serves as their RHA representative. In RHA, she serves on the Policy Committee that looks at all the halls’ policies.
Readers of the Union Recorder can see Amy Howell’s name in print as she is a staff writer for the community paper. Howell is also a member of Gamma Sigma Sigma.
Mary-Elizabeth Watson and Gloria Lima both hold positions on the Campus Activities Board. Watson serves as the Director, and Lima is Assistant Director of Relations & Recruitment.
Rachel Bliss is a member of Gamma Sigma Sigma and is the student coordinator for campus Blood Drives.
Jennifer Malcom is President of the Kinesiology Club, a club for health science majors.
Brooke B. is the secretary of Outsiders.
J.W. Mozley serves as a Student Ambassador. He is also the Membership Vice-president of Gamma Sigma Sigma, the Academic Affairs Chair for SGA, and is the Attorney General for the college.
Josh Aldredge is a Resident Assistant in Napier and the Vice-president of Rho Alpha, an organization for RA’s. He volunteers with the Campus Activities Board and works for the Colonnade.
Plans for this year’s Emerging Leaders Retreat are now being made. Faculty, staff, and student organizations can nominate students who they think will benefit from the experience.
“My number one advice for people who are nominated is to go!” Malcom said.
“Do all that you can to take advantage of this opportunity. The retreat offers valuable things to learn, great friends to be made, and lots of fun to be had,” Fuller said.
“I learned a lot more stuff on how leaders here at Georgia College & State University work. Although I had been on many other leadership retreats, this one was more specific to GC&SU, which was a helpful thing.”
More information about this year’s retreat will be coming out soon to staff, faculty, and student organizations.
“Personally, I want to thank the staff, faculty, and RSO presidents who nominated students,” Pate said. “There could be no emerging leaders if no one recognized them. Thank you for being committed to the mission of the college by developing and educating not only in the classroom but in outside experiences.”
