SGA approves better student opinion survey
The Student Government Association is working on an enhanced and more comprehensive Student Opinion Survey.
At this time, students are filling out evaluations regarding their professors’ effectiveness. The current survey asks five basic questions: Does the instructor help the student learn the material, does the instructor show a positive attitude toward the material, is the instructor an effective teacher and so on. The students can strongly agree, agree, remain neutral, disagree or strongly disagree. J.W. Mozley feels the surveys are not effective.
“The current survey only asks five questions,” said Mozley. “It is not detailed enough to let the students express their feelings or concerns.”
The survey that was proposed to SGA on Wednesday lists 10 questions. The students still have the same options for the answers. Some of the questions are: Does the syllabus for this course completely spell out the instructor’s expectations, were the required assignments appropriate for the subject matter, did the class meet your expectations in terms of subject matter and more.
Mozley believes the evaluations will help the university determine if the university is working toward its goals.
“The new survey will include a general section relating to the university’s mission and the overall goals of the institution,” said Mozley. “A specific section related to individual departments of the university and specific learning outcomes will also be included.”
The professors will also be evaluated more often under the new survey.
“Each professor will be evaluated four times a year. This means that they will be evaluated twice a semester, so four different classes will be surveyed,” said Mozley.
The process of evaluating professors is required by the Board of Regents, and it is used in faculty members’ annual reports and during the tenure and promotion process.
