New Student Ambassadors selected
The Georgia College & State University Student Ambassador Team has been chosen for the 2001-2002 academic school year. Twenty new Ambassadors were selected after a lengthy application and interview process.
The selection committee for new ambassadors is composed of the Student Ambassador Team Officers. This year’s selection committee was very pleased with the number of applicants, as well as with the quality of the applicants themselves. Of the 75 applicants this year, 65 students were interviewed and 20 new ambassadors were selected.
New ambassadors were chosen based on academic accomplishments,
campus involvement, spirit, personality and knowledge of the university. Ambassadors also come from many departments and programs of different majors, representing the very diversity of this university. Team advisor Mike Augustine is very positive about the additions to this year’s Ambassador Team.
“A large number of the new ambassadors are freshmen this year. We like to bring them on board and have them all four years. They have the opportunity to learn as they grow, and become really experienced and know the University well,” said Augustine.
Duties of GC&SU Student Ambassadors include serving as hosts and hostesses at special university events hosted by the president, vice president, dean, Admissions Office, or Alumni Foundation Office. Ambassadors also serve as orientation leaders during the summer. Students interested in these summer positions must be ambassadors before applying to work as orientation leaders.
President Rosemary DePaolo is proud of the GC&SU Ambassadors program.
“The ambassadors are an extraordinary group of students and impress all the groups they meet through their work. I’m delighted with how this program has grown and developed,” said DePaolo. “Our only problem is how to select from among so many excellent candidates.”
The GC&SU Student Ambassador Team has experienced an increase in interest as well as competition for openings each year. This year, the team received 75 applications, more than any year before.
“There has been a big increase in interest every year so far,” said Augustine.
The purpose of the GC&SU Ambassador Team is to identify a select group of students who are dedicated to enhancing the image of GC&SU, and to train these student to be effective hosts and hostesses during orientations and special university and Office of Admissions events and programs. The program also provides these students with opportunities for developing leadership skills and building professional and social self-confidence.
Freshmen receive a GC&SU Student Ambassador Team guidebook each year, filled with information about the Ambassadors.
Team member Crystal Cammon said in the guidebook, “When I visited this campus, the students, faculty and staff all made me feel welcome and gave me the sense that I belonged. I recommend GC&SU due to its safe, friendly and helpful environment.”
Wendy Nkari said in the guidebook,” I would encourage anyone from all over the world to attend GC&SU because of its rich cross-section of international students who are ready to help one assimilate into the campus.”
Anyone interested in becoming a Student Ambassador may apply each fall semester. The application deadline is in September each year. For an application, or for more information on the GC&SU Student Ambassador Team, contact Mike Augustine in the Admissions Office at 445-6284.
