Mass Communication Program holds ‘Mediafest’

Georgia College & State University’s Mass Communication Program is reaching out to local high school students by offering a day-long event Monday, Nov. 12.

Mediafest is an annual event sponsored by the GC&SU Mass Communication Program to educate participating high school juniors and seniors on the different areas within the Mass Communication field.

Dr. Ginger Carter, associate professor of Mass Communication and this year’s coordinator of Mediafest, said the event is a tradition of the programs.

“This is the 17th year of Mediafest, and we’re pleased to carry on this important tradition,” Carter said. “Our Special Events Planning class has been working all semester to plan this event, and we hope the visiting high schools will enjoy it.”

An event that was started in 1985, Mediafest provides students with the opportunity to learn more about the mass media through workshops with media professionals. Through listening and participating with speakers from the many fields of mass communication students will gain knowledge about the value of studying mass communication at GC&SU.

“The students have invited some wonderful speakers for Mediafest. Several are alumni of our program, and it always pleases us to invite alumni back,” Carter said.

This year’s speakers include Dawn Sharp, president of Rain Communication, Julie Harrell, corporate marketing director for Jocks and Jills, Daniel Barry, staff photographer for The Union-Recorder, Scott Hartman, sports reporter and anchor for Channel 13WMAZ, Harold G, a Macon disc jockey for Love103.7 and Jim Wooten, associate editorial page editor for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“We’re happy to have two alumnae speak at Mediafest this year. One speaker, Dawn Sharp, is the owner of a successful advertising agency, and Julie Harrell, a former editor of The Colonnade, is corporate marketing director of Jocks and Jills,” Carter said. “Jim Wooten is a member of our Mass Communication Advisory Board.”

This year’s Mediafest will also offer a special presentation from Panasonic, offering a technological perspective to television and video. Jared Johnson, assistant professor of mass communication, said the presentation will allow students to see the type of training offered at GC&SU.

“Panasonic will be conducting seminars during Mediafest designed to introduce prospective students to the latest technologies in broadcast television and video,” Johnson said. “They will use big-screen plasma displays to demonstrate what types of cutting-edge technology students can expect to receive training on while here at GC&SU.”

Mediafest not only provides information about the mass media but also, it allows high school students to see the advantages of attending GC&SU,and of studying within the Mass Communication Program.

“Our majors are excited that students will be coming to our campus to learn more about Mass Communication. We’re proud of the students enrolled in the Mass Communication Program here, and we know we have a lot to offer a student,” Carter said. “Mediafest allows us to showcase our program and our outstanding mass communication majors.”
