Plans for BAVA are being made

Mark your calendars. BAVA Fest will return to Georgia College & State University Saturday, April 13, 2002.

BAVA Fest is a full-day festival carried out to entertain students while creating awareness about community services and community service organizations. The entertainment is provided by everything from vendors selling food and trinkets to a concert put on by several different bands.

The day starts with service agencies handing out literature educating everyone there about the community services that can be helped. After that, the concert will start and continue for the rest of the day. The concert will lead up to some type of donation to a community service organization that has been previously chosen.

“The last two years we chose A.N.G.E.L.S. as our organization that we would donate money to,” said Eddie Howard, Director of Student Activities. “This year what I plan to do is hold a selection process to choose the community service organization. What we want to try to do is expand on the idea of the concert and give other community service organizations the opportunity to help our concert be sponsored.”

Among the organizations in mind are the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. The organization chosen in the end will be the one with the best plan on what to do with the money.

Since its inception, Ginger Eady has been the chair of the planning committee for BAVA Fest. This year Eddie Howard will be taking on the responsibilities as chair of that committee. One of the responsibilities that Howard will be in charge of will be the tough task of picking the bands for this year’s concert.

“I’ve already gotten tons of e-mails from students saying that, ‘This is the band that I would like to see,’” said Howard.

What Howard would like students to do is come with their ideas and give reasons as to why they want the particular bands along with other ideas for planning. The most help is needed in the area of headliners for BAVA Fest.

“We have a difficult job, because we have to try to find a band that will cater to a diverse population of students,” said Howard. “We stress that students be realistic in the choices of bands. We are a small campus with a small budget, but we can still put on a good concert.”

Last year’s BAVA Fest had only one problem according to Howard and that was the clean up effort.

“A lot of the stuff did not get cleaned-up like we wanted it to, but this year that is going to be a major emphasis of mine. We’ll make sure that doesn’t happen again,” said Howard.

The behavior of the students last year should be mentioned, also. No major incidents such as fights or arrests caused any major problems. This is a great accomplishment, since the attendance numbers for BAVA Fest doubled compared to the year before and since BAVA is an alcohol event. Georgia College & State University does not sell the alcohol, but students who are of age can drink and everyone will be carded. A strong security presence will be felt.

The goal for this year is to start the BAVA activities around 4 p.m. and last until midnight. Howard encourages anyone who wants to attend to come out and have a real ly good time.

“We want people to come out, bring a picnic basket, invite their friends down and even invite family to spend the day with us,” said Howard.

Anyone who wants to get involved is encouraged to contact Eddie Howard at ehoward@mail.gcsu.edu. He will keep everyone who wants to help posted about what is going on.
