Intramural Bowling a success
Last Tuesday at Baldwin Bowling Center, Georgia College & State University held its 7th annual Intramural Tournament.
The tournament is an opportunity for all students to compete in a fun and competitive format. The tournament had 92 people sign-up, but only 24 people, or 6 teams, showed up on Oct. 23 to bowl.
Eleven people, or roughly three teams, represented the GC&SU Bowling Club. The Bowling Club teams swept the awards in the tournament, winning first place in team, girls and boys high game and high series. The Bowling Club team that won first place comprised of Bowling Club President Drew Jahr, Derrick Hutchens, John Mcafee and Marcus Knowles. This team represented GC&SU at Regionals at the University of Florida and at Nationals at the University of Nebraska-Omaha last year. The individual winners were also members of the Bowling Club. Rich Hardwick had high game and high series with a 243 game and a 640 series in three games. Mandy Adams had high game for the girls with a 146. Jami Kisida had high series for the girls with a 394.
The tournament was scheduled to be a single elimination round-by-round tournament, but not enough people showed up. Many of the bowlers felt that the tournament would have had a better turnout if more people would have been notified about changes in the date and time of the event. The bowlers felt that the tournament was thrown together at the last minute.
“It was unorganized,” said Drew Jahr, President of the Bowling Club. “We were scheduled to start at 4 p.m., and we did not actually start bowling till 4:45 p.m., which caused people that had to go to class problems. There was really no structure to it [the tournament].”
The tournament ended up being a three game series bowled by all the people on the teams, and the top three bowlers on each team would have their scores count towards the final team’s overall scores. All of the bowlers did not dislike the format for the tournament.
“The tournament idea was pretty good, just more people needed to show up,” said Bowling Club member Derrick Hutchens. “The tournament wasn’t that organized at the time of sign-up. It should have had more student input on how the tournament should have been run.”
The tournament was originally created by Bowling Club advisor Geza Martiny and former manager of Baldwin Bowling Center Loretta Morgan. The tournament was introduced, because for the Bowling Club to go to Regionals, they have to participate in one intramural event. Over the years, the tournament has become more of a fun intramural event for college students and organizations. However, for the Bowling Club, the tournament is the only form of competition for them before Regionals. The club does not receive enough funds to compete at scheduled events.
“When I first got here it was more competitive, it was more of a tournament style. The past two years it’s basically been you come, you bowl three games, and you leave,” said Jahr, who has been on the bowling team for the past five years. “With the setup that this tournament was given, it benefited us none when we go to Regionals.”
Some members of the Bowling Club felt otherwise.
“The tournament usually helps us focus our attention on the bowlers next to us, but without a lot of people there, it was hard,” said Hutchens.
The tournament was created for the enjoyment and fun of the student body. The Bowling Club competes in it as a serious competition, because it’s the only type of competition they see before Regionals.
