GC&SU wins west fling

Over the past weekend the Georgia College & State University tennis teams were in action, playing in the West Florida Fall Fling Tennis Tournament.

GC&SU’s Julia Roundkovskaya and Annika Persson took home all of the top titles over the weekend.

To begin doubles play, Roundkovskaya and Persson were the third ranked team in the tournament. The team played so well that they had no trouble advancing to the finals. In the finals match, these two defeated West Florida’s second ranked doubles team of Hope Zwilling
and Sabine Krawietz.

Roundkovskaya and Persson matched every shot the opposing players hit and won the event 8-4 to take home the Open Flight Championship.

In singles, the matches remained much the same until the finals, where again Roundkovskaya and Persson would have the final word in this, too. But now, unlike the doubles championship, these two were facing off against each other. Roundkovskaya, who was playing in her first tournament since having knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus four weeks ago, defeated Persson 6-4, 6-4 to claim the A Flight Singles Championship.

The round to the finals was not as easy as it seemed for both girls. Roundkovskaya, a senior, begin the day as the top seed in the tournament. Seeing as how she had not played all of this year the top seed was really quite good. Persson, a freshman playing in just here third tournament with GC&SU, was given the third seed. After Roundkovskaya crashed her first two opponents 6-1, 6-1 victory in the first round and a 6-0, 6-0 win in the second round over Alabama-Huntsville’s Carrie Gracey. In the quarters, Roundkovskaya did not have her best stuff but was still able to defeat West Florida’s Krawietz 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. The semifinals begin unlike any other matches for Roundkovskaya in the fact that she lost her first set 1-6. She did not give up and won the second set easily 6-3. Roundkovskaya was just too much for West Florida’s Zwilling as she claimed a easy 6-0 victory.

Persson won all of her matches in straight sets beginning with a 6-0, 6-1
win in the first round. In the second round, Persson won easily with a 6-3,6-2 victory. Persson steamrolled past the sixth seed of the tournament, Ilona Szalai from West Florida 6-2, 6-1 in one of her first quarterfinals matches at GC&SU. In the semifinals, Persson rolled right through her competition, which was second seeded Electra Henry from Auburn-Montgomery. With an 6-4, 6-3 win, Persson saw herself going into the finals, where she would eventually lose to her teammate Roundkovskaya.

Elsewhere, GC&SU’s Karin Ramstrom opened the tournament with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Spring Hill’s Tori Malone. But things changed as Ramstrom did not play well enough to defeat West Florida’s Szalai in the second round losing 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Jodi Lobsiger also won her first round match 6-0, 6-3, but then Lobsiger could not get past second seeded Henry from Auburn-Montgomery. She tried her best but was eliminated 6-0, 6-1.

Sophomore Kremena Vassileva lost her first round match in the open draw but won her next three matches in the consolation draw. Finally, Vassileva’s luck ran out as she was ousted from playing when she lost 6-2, 6-0. Lobsiger and Ramstrom also saw some doubles action and were able to post a 1-1 record
for GC&SU.

Things were not as good for the men. All of the GC&SU competitors lost in their first round action. But in the consolation draw, Florian Hieber won his first match of the day in the B Flight with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory over ABAC’s Camilo Sabogal. Hieber’s magic would run out as he would lose his next match 7-6, 6-1 to top seeded Hermon Collar from Spring Hill.

The West Florida Fall Fling ends the 2001 fall season for the Bobcats. With such a good start to the fall season, both of these teams look geared up and ready to go for the spring season.
