From the Bleachers

What is reading? To me, reading is the intake of words and truly understanding what the story or article is saying.

Whether you are a big sports fanatic or have no clue what the heck sports is, you should read the entire paper. What is the point of reading the paper if you only know half the news! True, most people think sports are not news, but when a team is crowned a champion in a certain sport, to me that is news.

Or if your college newspaper tries its best, week in and week out, to inform you with weekly sports columns, then you should read them. You can learn more about sports, and more importantly, you can learn more about the students who participate in the sporting events around campus.

Whether you are the president of the school or you are an incoming freshman, The Colonnade is a must read. This paper has so many great features other than the front-page story. This paper is a full ten-page weekly paper for the entire student body. Here at The Colonnade, we currently have seven editorial staff members (Two editors, a campus-news editor, arts & entertainment editor, a sports editor, a copy editor and an Ad manger). Every week these seven members bust their butts to make sure that everyone on this campus has at least news in all categories.

So, why not take an hour out of your life and enjoy reading the whole paper. The paper’s slogan is “Your right to know and our duty to inform.” This is in jeopardy, because people on this campus do not want to inform themselves.

Why is that? Everyone wants to have a better connection with this campus. So, why not read the paper and find out what is going on every week here at Georgia College & State University. If you have ever read the paper, then you see that we have a section called “What’s happening at GC&SU” on page three. This page tells you everything you need to know each week about events on our campus.

Are you doing a good job with being in touch with your paper? Most people are not, for the simple reason of laziness. True some people are busy, but to have no time to read a weekly paper is ridiculous. I cannot understand when people say, “I have been so busy that I did not have time to do anything.”

I know most people on this campus do not read the two sports pages, and that bothers me but not too much to cause any trouble. But, when certain people do not read the entire paper, that makes me mad. The Colonnade editorial board just wants to know what people think of this newspaper.

But, then again, that is hard for us to find out when people do not read the paper. We print 2,500 papers a week and want more than anything to make more copies of The Colonnade. To know that people do not read the paper is the biggest concern to any of the editorial staff members.

Many people will still not read the paper, and that is their problem, but if I changed one person’s opinion about The Colonnade, then it is worth it to me.
