Art department displays student works
The Art Department at Georgia College & State University is sponsoring an art exhibit displaying only the artwork of the students.
The art show will run Nov. 5 through Nov. 23 at Blackbridge Hall. The show will be open each day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This is the first time that the school has done an art show comprised solely of student artwork besides the senior exhibits. Students in the studio classes offered here on campus will provide the artwork displayed at the exhibit. There will be a variety of different artwork on display, including paintings, weavings, and drawings. Two pieces of artwork will be chosen from each class by the professor or by student vote to be put on display.
Dr. Patrick Hickey, a professor of two-dimensional design, is one of the professors that will have to choose artwork to put in the show.
“I will choose the entries on the merit of each piece, and I will choose them objectively,” Hickey said.
Ursula McCarty, professor of three-dimensional design, paper book, and sculpture, will also have the difficult task of choosing a limited number of pieces to put on display.
“I will choose one piece from each section, and the students will vote on the other, but I really want to show several different projects that we have done in class,” McCarty said.
Whether the students are choosing the artwork or the teacher is, it will be a tough job for anyone.
“It would be ideal to enter one piece from each student in the show, but there is simply not enough space,” McCarty said.
“It is very unfortunate that I only get to choose two entries, because the students have produced several good pieces this year,” Hickey said.
Leslie Ellington, a senior art student, also believes that the students are excited about this new event.
“The art show is an excellent way for the student body, as well as the community, to see how much talent the GC&SU art department really has,” Ellington said. “I think that this is a great way for students to get their work out there to be seen.”
There will be a reception on Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. to honor the artists. The reception will be an open house so that everyone can eat, look at the artwork and talk to the artists themselves.
