Students recruited with campus tours

Each year, representatives of Georgia College & State University’s Admissions Office give over 600 campus tours to prospective students.

Campus tours are a part of the GC&SU outreach to recruit new students. The core of a campus tour is the chance to meet with a member of the GC&SU admissions staff for an informal discussion, including a question and answer session.

Admissions counselors meet individually, or with small groups of visitors, to discuss the college admission process, majors offered, student life, on campus housing and financial aid opportunities.

Campus tours are given by student tour guides and also by GC&SU Visitors Center Coordinator Carrie Dietrich. The student tour guides are, in most cases, GC&SU Student Ambassadors before becoming guides. Dietrich said she is proud of the success rate of the campus tour program.

“The students who take campus tours give very good evaluations of their experience here, and generally name GC&SU as their number one college choice,” said Dietrich.

Some of the primary focus points of the campus tour are the main academic square, Russell Auditorium, the Sodexho Dining Hall, where they are treated to lunch, a residence hall room in Napier A, and the Coffeehouse.

Napier A is home to GC&SU’s Residential Freshman Experience Program, which is a transitional program for freshman students directly out of high school. Transfer students are also eligible for housing in Napier A. One of the most impressive parts of the tour is a look into the Coffeehouse.

“Our visitors are always very impressed by this beautiful area for socializing and studying,” said Dietrich.

Students who are interested in viewing more residence halls are able to do so, but only if Student Ambassadors are available to show their dorm room. Because of this issue, Dietrich encourages students around campus to become involved when they see a tour in progress.

“If students see a Student Ambassador or myself on a tour with potential students, I’d love for them to offer to show their room. We do not have access to the residence halls, so we’d love to have more students volunteer to show their rooms,” said Dietrich.

Information sessions are held Monday through Friday at 11 a.m., and also on Saturdays at 10 a.m., when the university is in session. Tours are not given during holiday breaks or on special event weekends.
