Max Noah Singers to perform diverse concert
The Music Department presents the Max Noah Singers on Tuesday, October 30 at 8 p.m. in the Max Noah Recital Hall.
The Max Noah Singers will be singing works by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Dobri Kristov, Joseph Clokey, Adam Gumpeltzhaimer, Gustav Nordqvist, and “Exsulpate Deo” by Alessandro Scarlatti. They will be singing in Latin, English, and Bulgarian languages.
“I really enjoy the songs, because they are challenging, especially the pieces in Bulgarian,” said Jessica Lucas, a freshman member of the Max Noah Singers.
“The songs are very challenging, but it’s a good variety with a wide selection of languages,” said Terry Hewitt, a senior member of the Max Noah Singers. “The African freedom song and the Swahili one are really free and cool.”
“We are an elite group, so the songs that we sing are considerably harder. If I were to look in my folder right now, I would find songs in eight different languages. The songs are in Belgian, Italian, and Latin,” said Andrew Scott, a sophomore member of The Max Noah Singers.
“‘Sicutcerrus’ is in Latin, and ‘Exsulpate Deo’ by Alessandro Scarlatti is in Italian. There is also an African Spiritual song called ‘Siyahamea.’ The song ‘Grasshopper’ makes fun of opera; each member gets to show off his or her hidden talent in an extreme way.”
“We did a concert for the Georgia Military College cadets last Wednesday. The cadets are required to attend a certain number of cultural events, and this concert counted as one,” said Scott. “They marched in before we started and marched out when we were done. They were very impressed and liked it a lot. We also did a concert at the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the Library.”
This is the first concert of the year for the Max Noah Singers.
“I am very excited, not only because this is our first concert, but because it’s my first concert in college,” said Lucas.
“I’m excited; it’s going to be really fun and interesting,” said Hewitt.
This concert is free and open to the public.
“The program represents music from around the world. There will be lots of styles, some beauty, and some humor,” said Caroline Carson, director of the Max Noah Singers. “The song, ‘Grasshopper,’ is very funny, and people should enjoy it. I hope everybody can come.”
“I think that we will do well,” said Lucas. “I think people should come because a lot of people aren’t exposed to classical music or a formal concert, and it would be a new experience for them to enjoy.”
“We have worked very hard, and a lot of the pieces work better when we perform, because we have audience participation. It is a wonderful experience when you look out into the audience and see them enjoying it as much as you do,” said Scott. “I hope everyone can come. Bring your friends and neighbors, and we look forward to seeing you there.”
The Max Noah Singers will also have a holiday choral concert called Yuletide Glow on Thursday, December 6, at 7 p.m. in the First Baptist Church. If you have any questions, please contact the Music Department at 445-4226.
