From the Editors

Okay, I know I am not the sports editor, but I have to talk about football. There is no other sport quite like it.

While tailgating at the UGA game this past weekend, I realized how bad we at GC&SU need a football team. I saw all of the students coming together and having fun before they went to support the team that they love.

So often we get caught up in schoolwork, daily activities and even the lives of others that we forget to let go and just have fun. When is the last time that you put off until tomorrow what you can do today? Personally, I don’t remember the last time.

I know there are students who need the release that football and having spirit for a team can provide.

We do have sports such as basketball, baseball and so on, but those players need to have the opportunity to support another team at their college. Those players need to have fun, too.

True. Football is an expensive sport to start up, but the money that is brought in is well worth it. The money is not only for good for the university but the community as a whole. The parents of the players will come to watch the games. They might stay in a local hotel if they are traveling far or if it is an evening game. They will eat at the local restaurants. Students will tailgate before the game, going to local grocery stores to stock their coolers and buy food to grill. The environment on game day will be overall livelier and the community may thrive off of that.

I look around every day while I am on campus and I see people wearing the hats and T-shirts of other colleges. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to wear the hat of your own team? To not have to go to another college to enjoy a great game of football?

It’s true that we do need to show more support at the games that we already have. More of us need to go to basketball games. The only game that has high attendance is the homecoming game. We need to show our support to the team that plays hard to make our university look good.

Maybe after the administration realizes that we, the students, can support the sports that we already have, then they will start making strides toward forming a GC&SU football team. We can’t just sit around and whine because we don’t have a football team when we don’t do anything to prove that we would support it.

So I challenge you to go support your teams. Go to the basketball, softball and baseball games. Go to any GC&SU sporting event that you can to show your support. Who knows, maybe we can help provide those players with some fun of their own at a GC&SU football game.
