“All-Campus Card”
Use of a single identification (ID) card to purchase food, books, or vending machine items, checkout library books, accept checks, vote in student elections, print copies of financial statements, and provide admittance to health services, residence halls, recreation facilities, computer labs, and parking lots may be one step closer to becoming reality at Georgia College & State University.
The “All-Campus Card” concept under consideration is currently being utilized at over 1,000 colleges and universities nationwide. The card system could provide pre-approved access to hundreds of services and include financial, security and verification applications. The long-term project, if deemed appropriate and funds are available, will focus on ways to streamline business processes, increase convenience and expand services for students, faculty and staff in all parts of the campus.
A task force has been formed under the direction of Harry Keim, Vice President for Business and Finance, in order to study the feasibility of moving forward with such a system. Task force members include Ed Boyd, director of Administrative Computing and Networking Services; Kyle Cullars, director of Auxiliary Services; Jim Fain, manager of Centennial Center Operations; Pam Glover, Comptroller and Senior director of Financial Services; Eddie Howard, director of Student Activities and Bill Richards, University Librarian.
GC&SU has retained Robert Huber of Robert Huber Associates in Scottsdale, Ariz., to provide guidance for the study. Huber is a national consultant and strategic planner who developed the “All-Campus Card” concept at Duke University in 1985 and has assisted over 150 colleges and universities including Harvard University, University of Vermont, University of Texas Arlington, University of Oklahoma, Purdue University and Georgia Institute of Technology. Huber will conduct interviews covering a variety of areas throughout the campus to develop a list of potential applications and the associated costs to the university.
In addition, Task Force Advisory Teams are being developed to assist the task force with gathering of information. The advisory teams will be composed of students, faculty and staff with specific interests in marketing, technical issues, business issues and card operations.
Upon completion of the study, a report will be presented to President Rosemary DePaolo for her action.
