Women’s Ensemble inspirational concert

The Music Department presents the Women’s Ensemble and University Chorus on Sunday, October 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church.

The University Chorus will perform “Followers of the Lamb” by Edwin Ferguson, “Good News” by Sam Marley, “Ava Maria” by Franz Biebl, “The Storm is Passing Over” by Charles Tindley, “Concerto for singing Chickens and Piano” by Stephen Lawrence and “O Magnum Mysterium” by Morten Lauridsen. The Women’s Ensemble will also perform works by Frederic Swift, Hans Leo Hassler, Rene Clausen, Randall Stroope, and Jeffrey Bishop. Beth Greene will accompany each of the pieces; Maria DeBacco will also accompany some of these works. These songs will be sung in English, Latin, or Bulgarian.

“These pieces represent a wide variety of styles and ways of thinking. Some of them are sacred,” said Caroline Carson, the director of all choirs here at GC&SU. “They are very interesting and convey messages to me. I think it is very important that everyone be expressive of those messages.”

“Most of these songs are inspirational, which fits to what the U.S. is going through. These songs will encourage people to press on through life,” said Demetrius Nelson, a freshman member in University Chorus. “We had one dark day, and we shouldn’t let that day determine our mood for the rest of the year.”

“It’s made up of a big variety; there’s something for everybody,” said Melissa Steedley, one of the members of University Chorus. “My favorite is ‘O Magnum Mysterium’; it is a pretty acapella piece.”

“There is a little bit of everything; they are very beautiful,” said Maria Hultstrom, a member of the Women’s Ensemble and a Casa Mundo student from Sweden. “They are different from what we sing in Sweden, but I like them a lot.”

“It is a lot of fun, and we have learned a lot,” said Stephanie Reeves, a member of University Chorus.

This is Carson’s first year as the director of The Women’s Ensemble, University Chorus and the Max Noah Singers.

“I’m very excited because this my first concert with GC&SU,” said Carson.

“I am really pleased with how excited the students are about the pieces. They are doing a great job,” said Carson. “They try really hard, practice notes and dynamics. They have great attitudes for trying different things.”

“She is doing a fantastic job. She brought in a big variety of repertoire for us to do,” said Steedley. “It gives us a good opportunity to experience all different kinds of music.”

“She is really good,” said Hultstrom.

“She is influential and encouraging,” said Nelson.

“I really like her,” said Reeves. “She really wants the chorus to be a big deal.”

The concert is free and open to the public. It’s on a Sunday because last year many students requested that the concert be during the weekend.

“I hope that everyone will realize that choral music is so diverse and students have worked really hard on this music,” said Carson. “The concert is free, so I hope everybody can come.”

“I was in chorus in high school, and this will be my first concert in college, so I’m very excited about it,” said Nelson.

“Whoever comes, no matter what your background, there will be at least one song that you would enjoy,” said Steedley. “There will also be a surprise funny piece.”

“This will be my first concert here, so I am very excited,” said
Hultstrom. “I think it is going to be a lot of fun and that we will do a great job!”
