The Voice

Politics today is important in society, especially since the acts of terrorism on September 11. Political issues range from the newly found anthrax, to abortion, to Bush’s campaign for our strike back.

Here in Milledgeville, Georgia College & State University student Ray Nestlehutt is taking on city politics by running for a seat on the Milledgeville City Council. Fresh ideas and a new flavor to such a historic town is what Nestlehutt is promising the citizens of Milledgeville if elected.

At the end of 1996, Baldwin County boasted a population of 42,544 with 19,345 persons residing inside the city limits of Milledgeville. Nestlehutt’s platform is designed especially for the college students who live in Milledgeville. He wants to give us a voice in local politics, a voice that should be heard, and to show his continuing representation by listening to all of our needs.

Nestlehutt has a GC&SU administrator running against him on the ballot. Ken Vance, an incumbent member of Milledgeville City Council, is running for re-election and is known on campus as the Director of Public Safety. He has been a Milledgeville City Councilman for about 20 years, and brings not only years of experience, but also a statewide perspective to the office.

The bigger picture here is , should a student with no experience run for city council? The answer is yes! Nestlehutt has every right to run thanks to the 14th Amendment, which explains out rights guaranteed to citizens of the United States.

The Colonnade thinks it is wonderful that Nestlehutt is running for city council, for three reasons: one, we admire the fact that Nestlehutt wants to get involved in taking action for his city of residence; two, Nestlehutt will be healthy competition for his opponent, Ken Vance; third, from a students’ perspective, maybe this will encourage students to vote or even become active in politics here in Milledgeville.

Whoever ends up winning this election, just know how proud we are to have two representatives from our school running for election. It might just turn out to be a good race between our two candidates. Good luck to both of you.
