Tennis has swinging results

Two weekends ago, Georgia College & State University’s tennis team hit the courts and had a good amount of success.

Freshman James Gorin gave GC&SU a really solid performance at the ITA Regional Tennis Tournament.

After Gorin opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Augusta State’s Jackson Hubert, his next opponent was USC Spartanburg’s Rodolfo Castro. With both players hitting great shots back and forth throughout the match, Gorin was able to finally put Castro away to win his second round match 6-4, 6-3. But young Gorin’s chances of becoming a champion ended when he was ousted in the third round. Gorin fell 6-4, 6-3 to Valdosta State’s top seed (and overall top seed of the tournament) Tobias Hunting on October 6th at the Armstrong Atlantic State University tennis facility.

The rest of the Bobcats did not have their best stuff; Mikael Petterson was the only other team member to win his first round singles match. Petterson defeated Valdosta State’s Justin Smatt 6-2, 7-5. The second round was not as easy for Petterson; he played the overall 3rd seed in the tournament, North Florida’s David Olave. Petterson put up the best fight he could but ended up losing the match 6-3, 6-1.

Thomas Karlsson and Alex Beauregard got off to rocky starts in the tournament. Both lost their opening round matches, but they were able to pick up a victory in the consolation round. Karlsson lost his first match 6-4, 6-1 to Valdosta State’s Andreas von Michaelis. Later, in the consolation bracket, Karlsson played well enough to earn a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Augusta State’s Paul Evans. The next match for Karlsson would be his last, as he lost to Armstrong Atlantic State’s Peter Morsley. Beauregard bounced back after Friday’s loss to Columbus State’s Gary Sullivan 7-6, 6-2. In the consolation round on Saturday, Beauregard came back with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Valdosta State’s Smatt. Beauregard then tried is luck against North Florida’s Hagen Endler but ended up losing in straight sets.

Per Schartum-Hansen lost a tough threeset match 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 to Armstrong Atlantic State’s Roger Thiele. Hansen again had another tough match when he went against North Florida’s Endler. This was a tough loss for Hansen, who lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Thomas Hemmestad also had a rough day, going two and out for the Bobcats. After a close loss to USC Spartanburg’s Diego Gonzalez-Orbegoso 7-6, 7-5, Hemmestad brought his game to the consolation rounds and eventually lost to Columbus State’s Marin Radovanovich in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles play, all three GC&SU tandems lost their first round matches, sending the Bobcats to the consolation draw. The men’s top doubles team of Beauregard and Petterson eliminated teammates Schartum-Hansen and Gorin in a really good match. Then the two faced off against USC Spartanburg’s Alessandro Demarzo and Ricky Martinez. With a good match at hand, GC&SU’s top doubles team got the victory 8-6. But the Bobcats lost the title match to Columbus State’s Kristofer Bergdahl and Radovanovich 8-2. Hemmestad and Karlsson tried their best as they teamed up for an 8-4 victory over Morsley and John Stone from Armstrong Atlantic State. In the next round, the duo came up on the short end of a 9-7 decision to USC Spartanburg’s DeMarzo and Martinez.

The Bobcats will be in action again October 26th-28th for the West Florida Fall Fling in Pensacola, Florida. With two good beginning tournaments in the books for GC&SU men’s tennis, the third and final for the fall season should have nothing but swinging results for the tennis players.
