Healing and Remembering Together
Students from two classes in the Art Department are working on a large art display that involves GC&SU and the entire community. The art installation is called “Healing and Remembrance” and is a project to honor and mourn those involved in the terrorist attacks on September 11.
The art students came up with the idea to distribute small wooden panels around the campus and community and to ask those interested to paint or write about how they feel about the attacks. Participants can paint, draw, write text, or paste pictures on the panels which will be displayed on campus and around Milledgeville.
Shannon Wallace, an art student, who with others came up with the idea, said, “Being far away from the attacks, it’s harder to express your feelings. The whole idea is to bring everybody together and give us a chance to show that we care.”
Ursula McCarthy, the art instructor for one of the classes involved, points out that this project is the largest art installation she has ever helped her students with because it not only includes the entire community but addresses a global issue as well.
McCarthy said, ” It’s been a huge learning experience for all of us.”
Students are asking fellow students as well as local schools, stores, churches, banks, restaurants, and businesses downtown to participate. Individuals on campus can create their own panel, as well as any clubs
or organizations.
“We have had a lot of people respond, but we will have to wait and see who turns the panels in,” said Wallace.
Businesses have shown involvement by donating wood and some paint supplies, but those involved in the project recognize that more materials, especially wooden panels, are needed badly.
Clubs around Milledgeville, such as the Pilot Club, have shown a lot of interest and enthusiasm. Patricia Wilkinson, the President of the Pilot Club, said, “We are very excited about getting involved with the students.”
The art students involved in the project have been working hard to make sure the panels and materials are being given to anyone interested. Students can pick up panels at the front porch of or inside Blackbridge Hall from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. Completed panels can be dropped off at the same time and location, preferably by November 4th, but panels can be added to the installation until November 18th.
Many of the panels will be displayed on front campus, but others will be
exhibited at the mall and in windows of downtown businesses.
“By placing them all over town, it gives everybody in Milledgeville a chance to see the art,” said Wallace.
The students involved are nervous about getting the project together on time but are enthusiastic.
“We’re very excited about this project and can’t wait to see it all come together,” said Wallace.
There will be an opening ceremony on November 11th at 2 pm on the front campus. Everyone is invited.
Please call the Art Department at 445-4572 with any questions about the panels or donations.
